Back pain and Work Related Upper Limb Disorders are on the increase, more than two-thirds of UK workers have experienced pains in their back, neck or upper limbs because they sit for too long at their desk, according to recent data by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
Almost five million working days were lost through back problems last year, with sufferers having an average of 20 days off.
It is recommended that people take a short break from their workstations every 50 minutes. However a poll of almost 2,000 workers, shows that most respondents are stuck at their desks for more than two hours.
RSI is the more commonly known term for a set of disorders called Work Related Upper Limb Disorders or WRULDS. Repetitive Strain Injury or RSI covers a wide range of injuries to muscles, tendons and nerves. Usually hands, wrists, elbows or shoulders are affected.

DSE risk assessments
One to one workstation assessments of approximately 20-30 minutes duration including advice and guidance on the use of laptops as a PC replacement. Assuming staff availability, 12 to 14 risk assessments are possible per day. Risk assessment sheets and a summary of all assessments completed are included in the cost of £350 plus travelling expenses.
DSE risk assessment training
Three hour training session combining DSE Regulations and ergonomics theory combined with practical demonstration and practice. Group sizes up to 6 with LCD projection provided. £250 plus travelling expenses. This option can be combined with 6 DSE risk assessments for an overall cost of £400 plus travelling expenses.
This short training course creates employees capable of assisting users to configure correctly their workstations.
Advanced DSE assessments
Advanced DSE assessments are 60-90 minute workstation assessments that generate a short report including an overview of the employee’s task and duties, their ability to fulfil their current role, any clinical history relevant to their use of DSE with a full set of recommendations with any necessary modifications or technology solutions. Product details with indicative pricing and example suppliers is included in this option. Cost £250 plus travelling expenses.
Manual Handling Awareness training
A 90 minute course designed to cover Manual Handling Operations for low risk workers (all admin/clerical and management staff) with a short 15 minute comfort break and including practical guidance with demonstration of kinetic lifting techniques. Group size up to 10 per session and 2 sessions possible per day. Cost for 1 training session £250, second session in one day £150 which equates to £20 per candidate.
Slips, Trips and Falls
A short 30 minute course that can be 'plugged in' to either DSE training or Manual Handling Awareness training course. Contact me for prices.
Individual Capability assessments
Individual Capability assessments are 90-120 minute assessments examining an employee’s job tasks and duties within the context of their diagnosed or un-diagnosed clinical condition. A short informal report will be generated outlining recommendations for modified hours and duties. Cost £300 plus travelling expenses.
